Duo Security Multifactor Usage

ISO Position Paper

Position Title: Duo Security Multifactor Usage

Position Audience: Princeton University Community

Contact: Information Security Office: [email protected]

Position Release Date: August 1, 2019

Problem Statement

Passwords have long been inherently weak in that even strong passwords can fall into the
wrong hands through phishing or other means. Relying on passwords alone for authentication
puts University information at risk.

ISO Position

Multifactor authentication (MFA) is currently the best means to secure accounts of any type that
rely on a password for authentication. Even if the password were to be obtained by attackers,
MFA will most often prevent the account from being used successfully. It is the ISO’s position
that all members of the Princeton University community must use Duo Security’s MFA product
to help protect University accounts.
